Farzi is a 2023 crime thriller television series starring Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi. It’s a very well acted, but slow show.
An artist who gets pulled into the murky high stakes of a con job and a fiery task force officer on the mission to rid the country of his menaces in a fast-paced, edgy one-of-a-kind thriller. The directing duo behind this show has already made some projects in this genre that were interesting in socio-political themes and messages, but this one left a lot to be desired at the end of the day.
Shahid Kapoor is terrific in the main role as the artist who loses his track and eventually his integrity. There is a lot of emotional intensity to be found within his performance and his character arc. Vijay Sethupathi is also excellent and quite complex in his delivery of lines that is both tender and exotic in a way.
But for all the great performances and the emotional sequences that are electric and at times genuinely riveting, Farzi also often times feels undercooked in its various disparate ideas and themes as well as twists and turns that don’t add up.
It lacked a more cohesive script and more confident directing, which is odd as it had a strong premise, but the execution really ended up being subpar. Too many characters have unfulfilling arcs and way too many plot threads are resolved either too quickly or overly roughly with a couple of twists being truly predictable and mediocre.
