Darlings is an Indian Hindi language film that was released on 5 August 2022 on Netflix. The film is directed by Jasmeet K Reen starring Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah and Vijay Varma as the main lead actors in the movie.
Premise
The story revolves around Badrunnisa Sheikh aka Badru who is a strong-willed girl who tries her best to save her failing marriage which has already failed with her husband Hamza Sheikh. However, things take a turn for the worse when Badru gets beaten up by her husband which forces Badru and her mother to take things into their own hands. He would assault badru while consuming alcohol and her mother even suggests she would even kill him if possible. Things tend to make it worse as the film progresses further and Badru is left with no choice with the violent episodes that happened to her and takes a dangerous step towards revenge. The rest of the story forms around what will happen to Hamza and who is the real victim here.

Jasmeet K Reen makes her directorial debut with Darlings and has depicted a storyline which has a powerful message with an abuser who is exploiting their partners with a subject of domestic violence. Although the message it wanted to portray to the viewers was quite sensible, but it needed some work when it comes to storytelling. The writers have developed a script which speaks about how women are often prone to domestic violence which runs around in circles with confined space throughout which makes it a monotonous drama that has a gripping plot twist with a suspenseful thriller….

Verdict
Overall, Darlings is a decent watch as it is heavily based on the subject of morally conflicted thoughts and feelings that swirls around domestic violence and dark comedy which is quite gripping at the same time intense as well. The film sheds light on male privilege and how women are going through physical and emotional abuse and intimidation which destroys their self-esteem. It is a very sensitive subject which foreshadows the heart-wrenching tale that is made with light and subtle humour which slips into the roles of the characters effectively.
